Description:

White Line Squares (triptych) presents three variations from Albers's most refined formal invention — the White Line format, in which a hairline white border separates the innermost square from its surrounding colour zones, generating a spatial tension and optical shimmer that the standard Homage to the Square format does not produce. Here, all three panels are drawn from the same chromatic family — an extended study in grey, charcoal, brown, and near-black — creating a triptych of extraordinary restraint and psychological depth.

The progression moves from dark to darker to darkest and back again: the uppermost panel descends through charcoal and brown-grey toward a near-black centre, the white line cutting a luminous sliver of air into the compression; the central panel inverts the logic, its black exterior giving way to softer warm greys within; the lower panel, rendered in silver-taupe, arrives as the quietest of the three — a whisper after two concentrated statements. Together they constitute a meditation on the near-absence of colour, on how much distinction the eye can extract from the most minimal chromatic range, and on how the white line — that single intervention — prevents the compositions from collapsing into mere darkness.

Mounted as a vertical triptych on wove paper, these offset lithographic bookplates are presented unframed and ready for installation — the vertical format suggesting a column, a sequence, a descent. For collectors of Albers, post-war abstraction, and Minimalism, this triptych is a work of exceptional sobriety and presence.

That same rigorous chromatic dialogue takes a more classical form in SP X (1967), a screenprint in which nested squares of colour build the optical tension central to Albers's practice. A broader view of the artist's signature format can be found in Homage to the Square (1978), a set of five chromolithographs each exploring a different interaction of colour within the square — both available now at Lynart Gallery.

FAQ

Are these original Josef Albers prints? These are original offset lithographic bookplates, produced as part of an authorised publication of Albers's work — printed to fine art standard on wove paper and intended for display.

What distinguishes the White Line format? A thin white line border between the innermost and surrounding squares creates a new optical layer — altering spatial and chromatic relationships between colour zones in ways that differ meaningfully from the standard Homage to the Square format.

Why are all three panels in the same colour family? Unlike the four-panel set which surveys multiple colour temperatures, this triptych is a focused study within a single chromatic register — greys, charcoals, and near-blacks — demonstrating the range of visual effect achievable within extreme restraint.

Are the works sold as a triptych? Yes — this is a complete triptych of three works, mounted and presented together as intended.

What does ARR mean? ARR stands for Artist's Resale Right — a legal designation entitling the estate to a percentage of the resale price on the secondary market.

Are the works framed? No — sold unframed and mounted, ready for bespoke framing as a vertical triptych.

Do you ship internationally? Yes — worldwide, with museum-grade packaging, full insurance, and shipment tracking.
