Teiji Hayama's unsettling grayscale portraits distort the faces of some of modernity's most iconic stars, rendering those faces both recognizable and uncomfortably "off." Hayama flips portraits of celebrities such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and David Bowie, repositioning mouths and eyes, superimposing silhouettes and blurring details to transform profiles that were once synonymous with glamor and presence into images of unease and of fatigue. Elsewhere, Hayama creates enigmatic still lifes from unexpected juxtapositions that combine banana peels and slippers or cigarettes and telephone sets. Hayama has exhibited in New York, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and Los Angeles. His works are part of the Maki, KAWS, Jean Pigozzi Contemporary Japanese Art Collection and Christian Léger collections.
