Description

Created in 1985 as part of Warhol’s celebrated Ads Portfolio, Volkswagen reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with branding, consumer culture, and corporate identity. In this late-career body of work, Warhol revisited iconic commercial imagery, transforming globally recognized logos and products into powerful Pop Art statements.

The Volkswagen logo — already a symbol of industrial design and mass production — becomes, under Warhol’s treatment, both an object of admiration and a subtle critique of consumer culture. Through bold color contrasts and graphic clarity, the image oscillates between advertisement and artwork, reinforcing Warhol’s lifelong exploration of commerce and art as intertwined forces.

Printed on Lenox Museum Board, a premium support frequently used for Warhol’s late screenprints, the work demonstrates strong color saturation and sharp definition. The edition is limited to 190, aside from artist proofs and special impressions.

Executed in collaboration with master printer Rupert Jasen Smith and published by Ronald Feldman Fine Art, this piece is fully catalogued in the Warhol Print Catalogue Raisonné (cat. no. 358).

Works from the Ads Portfolio represent Warhol’s final major print series and are considered key examples of his mature practice, bridging corporate iconography and fine art.
