Description:

SP III (Homage to the Square) (1967) is a work of extraordinary economy and depth — four concentric squares, progressively lighter values of grey nested within a deep forest green border, generating an optical vibration that no reproduction can fully convey. This is Josef Albers at the purest expression of his life's work: the systematic, almost scientific investigation of how colours interact, how the eye is deceived, and how perception itself can be made the subject of art.

The Homage to the Square series — initiated in painting in 1950 and pursued relentlessly until Albers's death in 1976 — comprises over a thousand works, each one a controlled experiment in colour relativity. The format never changes; only the colours do. Yet within that rigid constraint, Albers produced an inexhaustible range of visual and emotional effects. Here, the cool progression from dark slate to pale silver grey, held within the deep green exterior, creates a sense of recession and luminosity simultaneously — the innermost square appearing to recede into shadow or to glow with contained light, depending on the conditions of viewing.

Produced in a serigraph edition of just 14 — an exceptionally small number that places this work among the rarest of all Albers prints — the impression is titled in the lower margin. Albers's work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Tate, and the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, and his prints are actively sought by collectors of post-war abstraction, Minimalism, and Op Art worldwide. At this edition size, examples of this rarity seldom appear on the market.

Why is this work unsigned? A number of works from Albers's print editions were titled rather than signed in the margin — a practice not uncommon among his prints of the period. The work's authenticity is established by its edition documentation and title inscription.

What is the edition size? Strictly limited to 14 impressions — one of the smallest editions in Albers's print catalogue, making this an exceptionally rare work.

What is the Homage to the Square series? Initiated in 1950 and continued until Albers's death in 1976, the series comprises over a thousand works — all sharing the same format of concentric squares — dedicated to the systematic study of colour interaction and visual perception.
