Description
Created in 2017, Ian is part of Julian Opie’s celebrated Heads series — a body of work that exemplifies the artist’s distinctive approach to portraiture through radical simplification and graphic clarity.
Opie is internationally recognized for his reductive, stylized representations of the human figure. Drawing from a post-Pop tradition and often discussed alongside artists such as Alex Katz, Opie’s work distills portraiture to its essential lines and flat planes of color. In Ian, facial features are reduced to bold contours and simplified shapes, creating a striking and instantly recognizable visual identity.
Executed as a screenprint on sprayed aluminum, the work combines industrial materials with refined graphic execution. The freestanding sculptural format gives physical presence to Opie’s two-dimensional aesthetic, bridging painting, printmaking, and object-based art.
Issued in a limited edition of 20, aside from artist’s proofs, and published by The Cristea Roberts Gallery in London, this sculpture represents a highly collectible example of Opie’s contemporary portrait practice.
